Yoga Therapy at the Wantage Natural Therapy Centre

What is Yoga Therapy

Those who wish to develop their natural wellbeing may find yoga therapy a useful route. Yoga therapy is taught by yoga teachers with additional training and experience in the therapeutic adaptation and application of yoga. People may be taught one-to-one or in a therapy group setting.

Yoga Therapy may help support

Yoga used therapeutically may help many issues and can be appropriate for a wide range of ages and lifestyles as well as those looking for a healthier way of life. All that is needed from the participant is the desire to help her or himself and the willingness to practise regularly. Through practising a yoga therapy programme the participant may, for example, become more aware of posture and breathing. She/he may also find regular practice can help to promote relaxation, aid sleep and relieve tension; it may help to contribute to an increased sense of wellbeing and a positive mood.

What to expect in a session?

In a typical first yoga therapy session a medical history will be taken by the yoga therapist. The body, posture, simple movements and the breath may be observed and issues and concerns discussed. Working with yoga therapeutically is about the whole person. The yoga therapist will then assess how yoga therapy may help before planning and teaching a practice tailored to the needs of that individual. Practices may include one or more of a range of techniques such as posture work, breathing, relaxation, working with sound, reflection, and/or meditation. A number of sessions are likely to be needed to confirm safe and appropriate practice.

Catherine Watsham

I found Yoga in my early 20s, whilst going through a really stressful time! My weekly practice became a time for some self care, downtime, where I would escape the fast paced existence of life. It was an opportunity for me to reconnect, rejuvenate, find calm, and feel more positive. I also benefited from some new perspectives! Yoga philosophy is full of insights and wisdom in relation to how to live a happy and fulfilled life. These new perspectives massively helped me at the time to question the path I was following. When things aren’t working in life we have the opportunity to make different choices to be the best that we are destined to be.

Yoga’s transformational effects have fascinated me ever since, so much so that I retrained in 2013 to become a Yoga Teacher and then recently qualified as a Yoga Therapist. I am very much interested in the therapeutic use of Yoga and how it can help improve our health and happiness, and to reduce symptoms of chronic illness. Yoga’s philosophy and tools are designed for everyday life, to help us navigate life in a happier and more conscious way. Our thoughts, our creative power are very influential to achieving our best. They can impact how we think about ourselves and others, as well as determine our actions that follow. If we can become more consciously aware, to be able to choose our thoughts more carefully we can create a more positive and peaceful present moment existence.

I am a mother to three gorgeous boys and a dog. In my spare time I love being in nature, walking, gardening, I love to dance, sing and draw.

TESTIMONIALS

When I first started Yoga Therapy with Cath I was very anxious, in a low mood and not really enjoying life. I was stuck in a rut, not moving very well physically or mentally. After my first six sessions, working on calming my mind, releasing my body, gaining some new perspectives, breathing practices, meditation and becoming more consciously aware of how I felt on a physical and mind/emotional level I began to notice a real difference. I felt more energised both mentally and physically and felt in a more positive place. I feel so much better for making Yoga part of my daily life. I can’t thank Cath enough for her help in giving me the tools to get my enjoyment of life back, she is a wonderful teacher and therapist. She is totally dedicated and enthusiastic and puts so much hard work and thought into each session, especially tailored to my needs. She listens to any queries I may have and communicates her knowledge of Yoga practice in a clear and easy to understand manner.

Helen.
