EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy

EMDR therapy is a powerful and relatively new form of psychotherapy which was discovered and developed by Francine Shapiro in 1989. It is a non-drug, non-hypnotic psychotherapy procedure which does not require the therapist to know details of the events that have led the client to therapy, only what happens during the process. The EMDR process is client led and always remains within the control of the client.

EMDR is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE, cg26, 2005) for treating trauma symptoms. EMDR has been proven as effective in treating many other mental health problems:-

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Dissociative disorders

  • Work stress

  • Low self esteem

  • Phobias

  • Addictions

  • Sexual abuse

  • Performance anxiety

  • Relationship issues

  • Body image issues.

  • Complicated grief

How does EMDR work?
EMDR involves stimulating the left and the right hemispheres of the brain, very much like that experienced in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. The difference is that the person is awake and aware of what is being processed. Research suggests that events are processed in dreams using rapid eye movements.

This information is played in the form of dreams and if processed successfully then it is stored in memory and does not cause significant distress to the individual.  However, information processing can be disrupted for a number of reasons which can cause distressing symptoms such as anxiety, anger, guilt, depression, panic, flashbacks and sleep disturbance.

EMDR can restart this information processing by getting the person to identify an image, negative thought, emotions and sensations that accompany the experience. Then distress is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 (10=very disturbing) followed by the person tracking the therapist’s fingers, taps and/or sounds with their eyes. This runs the memory which desensitises the person and symptoms subside.

The memory loses its potency in terms of impact. This is continued until the distress rating drops to 1/10 or 0/10 and then a positive thought is installed with the original image.

EMDR treatment can then be used to address any future anticipated anxiety regarding situations that had previously triggered symptoms. Relaxation techniques are then used to end the treatment, allowing the person to leave the session feeling calm and safe.

Clara Long - Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) & EMDR Accredited Practitioner.

I have worked in both the public and private sector over the last 13 years.
I have treated many adults using EMDR including current and ex-servicemen and women. My experience includes facilitating a variety of groups; anger management, self esteem, assertion, cognitive behaviour therapy and closed loss groups.  I am now training in hypnotherapy. I have regular supervision for the work I do which enables me to practise safely and to ensure my clients get the best out of the work we do together.
