Counselling
There are
two counsellors at the Practice: Mrs Denzil Underwood and
Carolyn Carroll.
What is Counselling?
Counselling
provides a safe and confidential space for a person to talk
about issues which are causing them anxiety or distress.
Many people are unhappy within themselves.
They feel uncertain and want to explore their inner
conflicts. Others are
experiencing problems in their everyday relationships with
family, friends or in the work place.
Within a confidential environment, where the counsellor
respects and accepts the client, a mutual trust develops.
It becomes possible to have the time and space to explore
issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem,
loss, bereavement, relationship issues, trauma and anger.
How does it work?
A
counselling relationship is different from a social relationship
in that it is limited only to regular counselling sessions.
Counselling is either on a long-term basis where the work
continues for as long as required or on a short-term basis where
more specific issues form the focus of the sessions.
There is a commitment on both the part of the client and
the counsellor and sessions, lasting fifty minutes, are
conducted on a regular weekly basis at the same time and place.
In this safe non-judgemental environment, the mutual
trust which develops fosters the possibility to examine the
underlying feelings and issues that are causing distress.
The
Danish philosopher Kierkegaard understood the true nature
of Counselling when he wrote, “Life
must be lived forwards, but it can only be understood
backwards.”

|
Dr Will Edwards
I offer psychological therapy for
personal development and a wide range of emotional and
behavioural difficulties. Having had training in a
number of therapeutic techniques and ideas enables me to
consider a person’s difficulties from a number of
perspectives and to offer therapy based not only on a
person's needs but also on current research evidence.

About
me:
I have completed both undergraduate and
masters qualifications in psychology at Oxford Brookes
and Oxford Universities and a doctorate in psychology (PsychD in
Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology) at the
University of Surrey.
I am registered with the Health
Professions Council (the independent government
appointed regulator of psychologists in the UK) and I am
chartered by the British Psychological Society (BPS)
which means you can expect high standards of
psychological knowledge and expertise. It also means I
am committed to high ethical standards of practice and
professional development.
How
I work:
I work with clients using cognitive-behavioural therapy
(CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and person-centred
counselling. I have experience working within several
NHS and public service counselling and psychotherapy
services in Oxfordshire and London, working with
individuals with a broad spectrum of difficulties. I now
practise privately and have a special interest in adult
mental health, particularly difficulties that can arise
with life stage transitions.
Typically an initial consultation will
last for one hour and subsequent sessions will last for
fifty minutes. At the end of the initial appointment I
will share my initial understanding of your problem with
you, and propose the therapeutic approach I believe to
be an appropriate way forward. There will also be an
opportunity for you to ask any questions or express any
concerns you may have.

Appointments
and further information
Making the initial contact can feel quite
daunting for many people. If you do not feel that you
wish to speak to me at present, but have questions that
you would like answered, then please email me. If
you would like to speak to me, or would like to go ahead
and arrange an initial meeting, please telephone. If I
am unable to take your call immediately, I may be with a
client, so do leave a message on the answering machine
and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Please be
assured that all communication will be in the strictest
confidence and should I need to leave a message for you,
do be assured it will be discrete.

My
Philosophy
I believe that therapy
challenges us to look inwardly and beyond facades.
It provides us with a reflective space so that we
can engage meaningfully with ‘who we are’, our
relationship to self and to others.
How I work with Clients
My aim
is to help clients connect with difficult feelings that
are felt to compromise how life is lived and experienced
day-to-day. Through
our work together my hope is that clients will be able
to move beyond facades and resolve painful wounds that
are felt to hold them back.
What client’s find through working in this way is the
development of an internal strength that allows them to
become more of ‘who-they-are’ or ‘want-to-be’.
To support change in clients, I work sensitively
and explore what is felt to disturb or distress them.
I also pay attention to the therapeutic
relationship and our ability to engage with each other
openly.
