Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for over 5,000 years and is one of the oldest systems of healing in existence.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of acupuncture in the Western world. Now supported by clinical research, it is accepted as a form of healing alongside orthodox medicine.

Our state of health is thought to depend on the balance of yin and yang; these two fundamental forces are at the core of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The dynamic polarity between yin and yang gives rise to the vital energy called Qi. The Qi flows round the body in channels. When the vital energy is blocked or stagnates the flow of Qi is disturbed; this becomes the basis of illness.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include poor diet, over work, lack of exercise (or too much physical exercise), weather conditions. Also emotional factors such as anxiety, anger, sadness and grief, excessive worry.

The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points will free this blockage or stagnation, improve the flow of energy and promote healthiness.

Some conditions which may be helped by acupuncture

  • Back and neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, headaches, migraine, chronic pain syndrome

  • sinusitis, hayfever, asthma

  • stress, anxiety, chronic fatigue

  • bladder and bowel problems

  • skin conditions

  • menstrual  disorders, menopausal symptoms

  • hot flushes in cancer patients

It is often worth trying acupuncture for conditions which have not responded well to orthodox medicine.

In addition patients diagnosed with cancer can be provided with Qi Gong training to strengthen the immune system and counteract the side effects of both chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
